Generation 2050 Sets the Course for Mexico’s New Energy Landscape

Press Release – Thursday, April 23, 2026

Mexico City, April 23, 2026. — Intersolar Mexico, the leading platform driving the development of the solar sector in the country, will bring together innovative solutions, knowledge, and strategic networking opportunities in one place. Its seventh edition will be held from September 1 to 3, 2026, at Centro Banamex in Mexico City.

Ahead of the event, Intersolar Mexico is carrying out a series of key activities aimed at analyzing the state of the sector from the perspective of specialists from academia and industry. These spaces for dialogue help enrich the conversation, identify trends, and guide decision-making.

In this context, the webinar “Vision, Innovation, and New Talent for the Solar Industry” was held with the objective of exploring the impact of Generation 2050: young people who are currently preparing to lead the energy sector with new perspectives on sustainability, innovation, and inclusion.

The discussion featured Dr. Julia Tagüeña, Emeritus Researcher at IER-UNAM, and Dr. Karla Cedano, Head of Strategic Innovation at the same institution. Both agreed on the importance of building bridges between students, companies, and institutions to move toward a fair, inclusive energy transition with a forward-looking vision.

According to Dr. Tagüeña, although solar energy “is trendy,” its development dates back decades. In Mexico’s case, the creation of a solar energy laboratory in 1985 marked a turning point, when a group of researchers committed to a technology that was not yet part of the public agenda.

“That academic drive was key because it led to the formation of generations of specialists who today hold strategic positions in the sector. I am convinced that today’s students will be tomorrow’s leaders,” Tagüeña emphasized.

For her part, Dr. Cedano highlighted that from the classroom, students begin to understand the relationship between energy, the environment, and innovation, with their eyes set on 2050. By then, energy demand will grow driven by digitalization, and renewable energies—particularly photovoltaics and solar thermal energy—will play a central role within a diversified energy matrix.

The voices of Generation 2050 agreed that transforming the energy system is not limited to replacing technologies or expanding clean energy capacity; it also involves fundamentally rethinking how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed. In their view, building a sustainable and equitable future requires integrating social, economic, and environmental dimensions into every decision in the sector.

Through an interactive activity, the main concerns of young people were identified. Among them, financing, technology recycling, and the lack of government incentives stood out, while misinformation was pointed out as one of the greatest obstacles to the sector’s progress.

“For new generations, sustainability cannot be separated from social justice. This means ensuring that the benefits of the transition—such as access to clean energy, green jobs, and technological development—reach all communities, and not only those that concentrate capital or infrastructure,” Cedano emphasized.

From the student perspective, Intersolar Mexico represents much more than an exhibition; it is a key space for connecting academic training with the reality of the sector. Young participants agreed that this type of platform allows them to gain firsthand knowledge of how the industry’s current challenges are being addressed, while also identifying professional development opportunities.

“They are not just events, they are connection points,” they noted, emphasizing the need to interact with companies, specialists, and decision-makers in order to transfer that learning into concrete projects and solutions as part of their education.

The session concluded with a shared idea: the energy transition is both a technological and social challenge that requires innovation, global cooperation, and, above all, the participation of new generations.

Intersolar Mexico is aimed at investors, project developers, solar technology and solutions companies, integrators, EPCs, distributors, public sector representatives, regulators, academics, and energy specialists interested in accessing innovation, technical knowledge, and high-value connections.
