Agriovoltaics: Synergy between Solar Energy and Sustainable Agriculture for Mexico

Press Release – Tuesday, July 1, 2025

Mexico City, July 1, 2025 – Intersolar Mexico, the country’s leading event for the solar industry, will hold its sixth edition from September 2 to 4, 2025, at Centro Banamex, Mexico City.

Since its debut in Mexico in 2019, Intersolar has established itself as the premier platform for advancing the solar sector in the country. The event brings together key industry stakeholders, showcases cutting-edge technologies, fosters strategic collaboration, and strengthens the national energy ecosystem.

Focusing on photovoltaic, solar thermal, and energy storage technologies, Intersolar Mexico 2025 will feature a three-day International Conference , where renowned international experts will analyze market trends, technological advances, and investment opportunities.

To foster knowledge exchange, the webinar “Agriovoltaics: Enabling Social and Environmental Solutions Through Solar Energy” was held with the participation of Marisol Oropeza, spokesperson for Intersolar Mexico, and Valeria Amezcua, President of the Mexican Agrovoltaics Network.

During the session, Marisol Oropeza announced that this year, Intersolar Mexico will launch a new open-access stage for visitors called the Innovation Forum, where leading-edge technologies, recent developments, and R&D projects tailored for the Mexican market will be presented.

She also highlighted the importance of visiting the Intersolar Stage, which will feature presentations by exhibitors and partner organizations showcasing solutions, products, and services with high implementation potential.

Valeria Amezcua mentioned the definition of agriovoltaic agrivoltaics as the shared use of land between electricity generation with photovoltaic technology and agricultural activities (or other land uses) functioning symbiotically. Also, she noted that by the end of 2023, the United States and Europe had installed over 36 gigawatts of agriovoltaic capacity — a testament to the rapid growth of this technology as a viable solution to energy, agricultural, and climate challenges.

According to Amezcua, agriovoltaics aims to be a holistic, sustainable solution — not only addressing climate change, but also preserving biodiversity, reducing land-use change, increasing access to freshwater, and promoting agroecological and sustainable farming practices in alignment with planetary needs.

“We founded the Mexican Agriovoltaics Network to contribute to the country’s energy, food, and water security,” explained Amezcua. “In the U.S., sheep are used for low-cost maintenance of PV systems — and in return, the panels provide optimal grazing conditions for the animals.”

“Maximizing land use has become a global priority. In some countries, PV is now viewed as a threat to food sovereignty. For example, China has banned the leasing of farmland for PV projects, as it compromises agricultural use. Italy recently introduced new regulations that prohibit the installation of solar panels below 2.1 meters in height, in order to support food production underneath,” she added.

Both experts agreed that agriovoltaics goes beyond the kilowatt — and that Mexico is uniquely positioned for its development, thanks to high solar radiation, vast agricultural land, and rural communities with strong potential for sustainable growth.

On just one hectare, food, energy, and social solutions can coexist. When a farmer transitions from conventional to regenerative agriculture — a process that can take four to five years — having a PV system to generate and sell electricity could provide essential financial support.

Thus, agriovoltaics is emerging not only as a trend, but as a well-established international strategy for optimizing land use, reducing water stress in crops, and driving a sustainable energy transition.
