Electrical Energy Storage in Mexico: Business Models and Responsible Value Chains

Marvin Gareiss is Product Manager at Aurora Energy Research, where he leads the Mexican research team. His work focuses on developing Aurora's long-term forecasts on the evolution of Mexico's power market, with a specific focus on renewables, conventional technologies, and energy storage assets. He delivers analysis around regulatory and market uncertainty for clients who are interested in or active in the Mexican power market.Before joining Aurora, Marvin worked at BCG, focusing on energy markets in Europe and Africa. Marvin holds a master's degree in Economics from the University Carlos III, Madrid, and a B.Sc. in Finance and Economics from Goethe University, Frankfurt.

Diana Rebollar holds a degree in Sustainable Energy Systems Engineering from the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, with a master in Disaster Risk Management and Climate Governance. Diana has worked for 7 years in International Cooperation projects on energy transition issues such as market development, innovation in business models in the solar sector in Mexico, innovative financing models, capacity building, among others. Diana is currently working as Energy Advisor in the German Mexican Energy Partnership implemented by the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) where she leads activities on energy storage exchange between the two countries.

I am an independent sustainability and human rights due diligence (HRDD) specialist with over a decade of experience at the intersection of sustainability, human rights, and international development. My work bridges advising responsible business practice with real-world impact, spanning HRDD development, ESG strategy, CSDDD and EUFLR-aligned reporting, and global stakeholder engagement.My background includes strategic humanitarian project leadership, Nordic ESG management, and academic training in International Relations, supported by a systems-thinking approach to risk and transition planning. Most recently, as Sustainability Due Diligence & Social Impact Manager at OKQ8, I designed and built the Group's first HRDD program and acted as Lead Researcher in an externally funded innovations project focusing on HRDD development within the global battery value chain. The reflections and insights I share are entirely my own, drawn from this professional experience as previously presented in public settings, including a talk at LOOP Copenhagen in April.I now speak independently, sharing practical, evidence-based insights on embedding responsibility into fast-moving, globally interconnected supply chains. My particular focus is on the battery sector's human and environmental risks, and how companies can move from risk-mapping to genuine resilience. A core theme in my current work is that "comply or die" is out: I advocate for Collaborative Contracting as the foundation for supplier engagement, replacing one-way compliance demands with partnership-based approaches to unravelling the value chain and co-developing solutions to human rights hot spots. My aim is to contribute to industry learning and support the development of scalable, credible approaches to responsible energy transitions.

Dr. Carolin Antoni is Sustainability Manager at the Mexican-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CAMEXA), where she leads interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of energy, sustainability, and economic development. She currently coordinates high-impact initiatives in collaboration with GIZ, including programs on green jobs, sustainable finance, hydrogen (H2UPPP), and the German-Mexican Energy Partnership.With a strong academic background in environmental sciences and socio-ecological systems, Dr. Antoni holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences with a focus on agronomy, as well as a Master's degree in Environmental Sciences and an engineering degree in environmental protection. Her work is driven by a systemic perspective on sustainability, resilience, and resource efficiency.Dr. Antoni has extensive experience in project management, stakeholder coordination, and capacity building. She has led multi- and interdisciplinary teams, developed and delivered training programs, and advised companies ranging from international corporations to SMEs on sustainability strategies and implementation.Prior to joining CAMEXA, she worked as a commercial advisor for Central America at the Austrian Embassy in Mexico and collaborated with Bosch Mexico as a coach and training coordinator. She also held academic positions at the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí, where she conducted research, taught courses on environmental impact and research methodologies, and contributed to the development of international postgraduate programs on resource-efficient cities.Her professional experience also includes environmental consulting in Germany and collaboration with SEMARNAT/GTZ in Mexico on risk communication and site remediation. Dr. Antoni is fluent in German, English, and Spanish.
